By Poelo Matlala   It was dream come true for Mthatha born Nonceba Dyantyi when she passed her trade test in Electrical Engineering from Vuselela TVET College in Klerksdorp, North West Province. Nonceba is one of Municipal Infrastructure Support Agent (MISA) apprenticeship programme beneficiaries. MISA recruits apprentices from TVET colleges and place them in municipalities for a duration of 3 years. During the placement period the learners receive on-the-job training and classroom theory respectively from their host municipalities and the TVETs. The programme aims to contribute towards building a skills pipeline in local government, with the view to improving infrastructure operations and maintenance. As part of the package, MISA covers the learners tuition, and provides monthly stipends, protective clothing and tools of trade. The learners are supported throughout the programme, until they pass their trade tests and receive their red seal certificates. The 30 years old Nonceba who fell in love with Electrical Engineering from a very young age, studied at Buffalo City TVET College where she obtained her N6 qualification. To broaden her scope, she decided to become part of MISA apprenticeship programme in 2015 after seeing the advert on the newspaper. Having successfully met the requirements she was placed at King Sabata Dalindyebo Local Municipality in the Eastern Cape. Dyantyi went through four phases of training. Phase one is induction, safety, hand tools and workshop tools; Phase two covers drawing, sketches and welding; Phase three which deals with conductors, cables and installation; phase four which looks more into electrical measuring instruments, panels, electrical equipments and electronics. After finishing all four phases of training Dyantyi went to do on-job training at King Sabata Dalindyebo Local Municipality for the duration of twelve months then she went back to Vuselela TVET for trade test preparation and to take the test which she passed and attained her red seal certificate. “It wasn’t an easy road but I’m glad to have achieved this milestone, I would like to thank MISA, KSD Local Municipality and Vuselela TVET College for providing me with an opportunity to become a qualified artisan.”, she said. Asked about her future aspirations, Nonceba said she wants to open her own electrical company which will create many employment opportunities.
